Beauty is Storytelling
I think that our appreciation of beauty is really closely tied to the stories that beautiful things tell, whether the story is "another human made this, and that's impressive" or "this makes me feel something that connects me to the artist/subject" or "I know something about the artist".
For example, James Krenov made good cabinets, but we only care because we care about Krenov himself, and the story he told about how human furniture could be, and how human furniture makers could be. Anyone can toss some mathematical proportions together, but turning the math into human connection and emotion is what makes it beautiful.
I'm still figuring out what story I want to tell with my work. Something about depth, texture and the inherent worthiness of humanity. We all deserve to surrounded by beauty, a kind that is both approachable and speaks to our souls of higher things. Does beauty like that even exist? Someone has to have the audacity to find out.
